The most attention
grabbing plant at the show was this Stapelia hirsuta. It was not
the most attractive plant but this one bloom simply stank and in Billing near
the sewage treatment works this was some achievement.
The Ed's boys used to call them 'doggy-pooh' flowers. The Stapelia game-plan is
to have flowers which look like and smell like a dead animal. Long hairs waft
the stench on the breeze and are a magnet for flies which pollinate the flowers
while laying their eggs. Life in the raw! Meanwhile at the show the Ed was
greeting visitors from a station nearby until he noticed he was getting funny
looks and wrinkled noses.
By Sunday the
weather was cooler and the scent had largely faded. I put the plant in a sunny
place outside for a better picture but it failed to attract any flies.
