The plant is a grafted Digitostigma caput-medusae, AKA Astrophytum caput-medusae, a novel 'curiosity' from Mexico. 

Curiosity because no one knows exactly where in the Cactaceae this plant belongs, though it does have Astrophytum flowers and fruits.

As to the rest of it - in the Ed's fantasy world it is an Anacampseros gone wrong, very wrong, (but no brownie points in the Judges' Course identification parade for that).
