Northants News 17.2 Summer 2006

Odds and endpieces

Trevor Wray

These are the bits that fill the spaces and back page of the printed edition of Northants News but strangely there were no spaces - each article filled a whole number of printed pages. If you read the internet editions of the magazine and have any comments we welcome feedback. (Trev _trevorwray@aol.com)

If you fancy writing something for the 50 readers of the NMK (Northampton and Milton Keynes) Branch of the BCSS (and of course the World!) it should definitely be non technical. Also positive about our hobby. Please contact us.

If you want to use any of our material, either writing or pictures to promote the cactus hobby, please do. (Though we would like to know.) There are generally high resolution images available for every fuzzy picture you see here.

Finally here is the back page of the magazine, don't smudge the ink!

 Only in America

NN’s Grand Junction reporter, (that’s Colorado, not Crewe), Don Campbell, writes of his success at his local show.

Trevor,

Knowing how you appreciate truly fine plants, I thought you might enjoy a glimpse of the rare beauty that won "BEST OF SHOW" in the Open Division at the recent Colorado CSS Show in Denver.  As I recall you were so smitten by this plant on a previous visit to GJ that you took its picture.  You're probably thinking that the BEST OF SHOW in the open division is the Echinocereus.  Not true, it's actually the beautiful, yet sometimes overlooked and berated, Myrtillocalycium 'Polyp'.

Etc…

Don

Thanks Don but being smitten with it was not the actual reason I took the picture. However, congratulations on your successes at the Show. I suppose it was the flowerpot that swung it!

Pictures below show Don’s superb and much decorated Echinocereus pectinatus, (not considered good enough to be the best plant, though it was the best cactus), a dysfunctional thing called ‘Polyp’ (which was) and Don with matching apron and hat. You can detect that things in the US are rather different from Middle England. Not better, just different!

 Another Ebay must-have!

Fate Fortean Magazine DEVIL CACTUS HALLUCINATE UFO's

Description

Fate Magazine, July 2002, in used, but good condition, (one crinkled page), True Reports of the Strange and Unknown. Some articles included are: The Carteret , NJ UFO sightings, Folkloric Herbal, Hallucinogenics, Acient Sibyl, UFO's. 66 pages.

To think I thought it was a cactus magazine! (Though perhaps those Acient Sibyls are new species of stapeliads.)
